Lawmakers in Arizona recently passed one of the harshest anti-immigrant laws in U.S. history. SB 1070 grants police the authority to demand documentation of anyone who "looks like an immigrant", effectively legalizing the racial profiling of Latinos and other people of color. The law even empowers Arizona residents to sue police if they are not "aggressive" enough in detaining immigrants. Most troubling is the fact that a dozen other states are now debating similar legislation.

But the bill has reignited a national movement to challenge this racist legislation. Protests of immigrants and their supporters have erupted from California to New York. Expressions of solidarity have poured in from labor unions, civil rights groups, LBGT organizations, and even sports teams.

Vermont is not immune to these national developments. Undocumented immigrants here face the constant threat of harassment and deportation, while community activists have organized support networks
in numerous communities.

Join a discussion on why the bill in Arizona passed, and what we can do to defeat the politics of fear.
